Parañaque to impose single-use plastic ban in June
Parañaque City is banning single-use plastic in all commercial establishments starting June 2020.
Under City Ordinance No. 18-40, Parañaque City will no longer allow restaurants and other commercial establishments to use plastic bags, plastic utensils, and disposable straw.
“Styrofoam and single-use plastic being a non-biodegradable material, clog our canals, creeks, rivers and other waterways and during the rainy season end up in the Parañaque River causing floods to the surrounding barangays,” according to the ordinance.
Under the measure, only manufacturers in the city will be allowed to use such plastics for packaging, but supermarkets and public market vendors will be asked to use biodegradable plastic.
Violators will be fined P5,000 for every offense. On the third offense, violators will be shut down and their business license revoked for one year.
Parañaque City is one of the seven local government units in Metro Manila to limit the use of plastic. Others are Muntinlupa, Pasig, Makati, Las Pinas, Quezon City and Pasay.
