The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has ordered the closure of a Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) which has an office in the Bay Area.

Great Empire Gaming and Amusement Corporation became the first POGO to be shut down by the government for failing to pay taxes.

Complying with the directive from Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez, the BIR through the Task Force POGO enforced the closure of Great Empire for allegedly violating Section 115(b), in relation to Section 236 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended (Tax Code).

The BIR padlocked the offices of Great Empire in Subic Bay Freeport; Eastwood, Quezon City; and Aseana City, Parañaque on September 25.

Results of the investigation show that GEGAC is not registered for VAT purposes violating the Section 108 vis-a-vis with Section 115 of the Tax Code as certified by the Revenue District Office 019 – Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

The Closure Order was issued by Deputy Commissioner for Operations Group Arnel SD. Guballa.

It was approved by BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay.
