Baclaran Church announces public veneration of Our Mother of Perpetual Help
The Baclaran Church is inviting the faithful, Marian devotees in particular, to the public veneration of the revered icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (Ina ng Laging Saklolo).
The image was temporarily removed from the altar of the church and transferred for safekeeping as renovation work at the church, also known as the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, began.
The image will be displayed for public veneration and vigil after the 5:45 p.m. holy mass until midnight tomorrow, September 7, eve of the Nativity of Mary. “This is timely as we celebrate the birthday of Mary on Sept. 8,” said church officials.
The icon of the Blessed Mother will again be available for public veneration on Sept. 10, after the 9:30 a.m. holy mass until midnight.
“After the scheduled venerations, the Redemptorists will secure the icon until the altar is ready for her return,” church administrators said. Renovation work is expected to be completed in about a month.
The shrine is inviting the faithful to take advantage of the “very rare occasion to have a closer encounter with the icon. May this experience help us to reflect from heaven to meet us in the rough grounds of daily living.”
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said this is only the third time that the Our Mother of Perpetual Help icon was removed from the church’s altar after 27 years. The first time was during World War II for safekeeping and the second in 1992 when the icon underwent restoration.
